Verizon FiOS New York - Regulators Getting Tough
In New York, state regulators are considering banning Verizon FiOS from installing its fiber-optic FiOS service in New York City until Verizon ensures that it's doing enough to provide electrical grounding for its equipment in homes. Poorly grounded equipment or cables could potentially ignite electrical shocks or start fires, although there have none to date. It is more or less a precautionary move.
New York is the only state to raise these concerns, but Verizon FiOS is installing their service in 15 other states. The New York regulators are concerned that the coaxial cable could inadvertently carry a high voltage and be dangerous to people living in their homes.
There are 3 million households in New York City and it is the single largest market for Verizon FiOS and is a big growth opportunity for the company. Verizon is inspecting all of the several hundred thousand FiOS installations in the state made earlier in the year, and is repairing the ones that don't meet the electrical code.

Common Cause/New York and People's production House have submitted cvomments regarding a wide range of problems with Verizon's plan to rectify these safety issues. Info available at: http://www.commoncause.org/site/apps/nlnet/content3.aspx?c=dkLNK1MQIwG&b=4072747&ct=5983465
I think New York has every right to protect the consumers by insisting that "Verizon FiOS ground all their electrical installations. We need to feel that these companies are doing the best they can to avoid fires or other damages and injuries that can result from their not grounding these installations.
Mariane, I completely agree with you. Safety absolutely needs to be priority one when installing Verizon FiOS...
Hey Thanks for the heads up on this, at least New York is looking out for the consumer, hopefully the rest of the nation follows suit. New technology can be a gift and curse sometimes.
How do you not see through this? New York is doing the bidding of cable companies that don't want to compete with Fios. Of course the consumer should be safe and NY should make sure this is the case, but there is absolutely nothing to suggest that Fios is a danger from what I understand. FiOS doesn't even have electrical installations--it runs by fiber optics that don't conduct electricity. Cable on the other hand, maybe we should be watching out for them?
There was an article int he Albany paper last week that quoted an internationnal expert in grounding and electrical issues. He inspected Fios installations around the state and found absolutely no danger. He did say that cable and satelite installations may pose some danger
Why isn't NY regulating them?
